New Outpatient Services Building Groundbreaking

Groundbreaking for new Outpatient BuildingPrimary Children’s marked the beginning of construction on its new George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Outpatient Services Building at a groundbreaking ceremony.  When completed, the new building will house 41 outpatient departments in a six-level, 243,000 square-foot building.

“As one of the best children’s hospitals in the country, Primary Children’s is planning to meet the complex medical needs of children in the 21st century,” says Katy Welkie, chief executive officer of Primary Children’s Medical Center. “This new facility is phase 1 of a plan that will eventually include another building and a new inpatient tower. Future construction will be planned as patient needs grow.”

Ground Breaking CeremonyThe new outpatient building will be located on the west side of Mario Capecchi Drive, just across the street from the hospital, and will be connected to the hospital with an enclosed sky bridge. It will help ease the crowded space in the current hospital and provide additional space for future growth of outpatient services.

The project will include a parking terrace with approximately 900 stalls adjacent to the outpatient building and significant expansion and remodeling of the main hospital lobby to serve as the connection point for the sky bridge. It will also include a new education center to accommodate the needs of a world-class teaching and research facility.

New Primary Childrens Outpatient Buildling ModelThis is the most significant expansion Primary Children’s has had since it moved from its location in the Salt Lake City Avenues to its current location 22 years ago. The new state-of-the-art facility will house non-surgical pediatric outpatient clinics, in a space beautifully designed for the comfort and needs of children and their families.

Site preparation began early this summer, and construction on the building and parking terrace will begin in October. The outpatient building is scheduled for completion in late 2014.  You can watch the progress everyday by checking out our construction webcam.

The Child First and Always capital campaign was launched in 2009 by our foundation to raise money for this state-of-the-art facility.  The hospital’s own employees stepped up to support the new building by pledging more than half a million dollars in just a few months.  To date, Primary Children’s physicians, employees, board members, and numerous community members have contributed more than $12 million in charitable gifts to help make this building a reality.  The foundation hopes to raise $20 million dollars before the building is completed.  For more information, or to make a gift, please contact our foundation at 801-662-5959.
